CURRENT RESEARCH FOCUS
- Clinical islet transplantation is the best treatment option to restore the normoglycemia and good quality of life in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and chronic pancreatitis (CP). So far I was successfully involved in more than 100 clinical autologous islet transplantation procedure.
- During islet transplantation, about 50% of transplanted islets undergo immediate damage during peri-transplant period and moreover, the long term survival of graft is highly compromised due to various factors like IBMIR, hypoxic, innate and post-transplant immune reactions, etc. Thus, my current research focuses mainly on developing strategies to improve islet graft viability and function after transplantation.
- Since, Islet cells release miRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, extracellular vesicles and exosomes as representative molecules during various steps in transplantation and also during numerous pathological conditions, my research also focusing on identification of reliable markers and ultrasensitive assays to assess islet stress and damage.
